8 Dos and Don'ts for Travelling in Adelaide

8 Dos and Don'ts for Travelling in Adelaide

5 September 2017

Adelaide has a little for everyone; whether you’re planning to soak up the sun in one of the city’s pristine beaches or going for a wine tour in the Adelaide hills. Going to a new city is always thrilling, but one should always know things that might help them in their visit.  Here is a list of dos and don’ts that you should keep in mind if you’re planning to go to visit the Australian city.

1) Do take care of your safety. Make a copy of your passport and keep the original safely hidden and locked in your hotel room. Keep your valuables in the safety of your room as well. One thing I like to do in my travels is keeping my debit card and credit card separately, just in case the worst happens. Taking care of your safety should be on the top of your list, no matter which country you’re traveling in, as crowded places attract pickpockets, especially when tourists are involved.

2) Don’t swim in the ocean unless you’ve read the warnings posted on the beaches. You also shouldn’t swim outside the red and yellow flags at beaches. As Australian beaches are known for having quite a population of whales, you should take care of your safety as the flags designate the safe areas.

3) Do carry a list of emergency numbers wherever you go. For the emergency number in Australia, call triple zero (000). You will then be directed towards the police, fire or emergency department depending on the emergency and severity of your situation.

4) Don’t hire vehicles from unlicensed operators. These are illegal cabs, also known as gypsy cabs. These are personal vehicles used by individuals to offer unauthorised taxi-like services.

5) Do exchange money from a well-known money exchanger. Either exchange currencies from your home country or get them exchanged in a known money exchanger as the others are expensive. You can even exchange money at the airport ATM, but at times it gets empty because of the crowds.

6) Don’t eat, smoke, or drink in public transportations, public buildings, and most stores. If you want to enjoy your time in Adelaide, you might as well follow the basic rules of most of the places.

7) Do learn some basics about the major sports and local team. Australians take their sports very seriously, and learning about their favourite teams would give you a lot to talk about in bars and other places to make some Australian friends.

8) Don’t walk on the right side. Australians drive on the left-hand side of the road. That also means they to the left when on the streets, stairs, and stand to the left of escalators. If you walk on the right, you’d be blocking the way of those in a hurry!
